This particular piece by Robert D. Harris was created in 2009 using acrylic paint, pen, and canvas. The painting consists of a central image of a fish. The eye is drawn to the neck and gill area of the animal as it is painted using perspective to appear closer to the viewer. The lower body and tail appear farther away creating the allusion that the fish is swimming up toward the viewer. The color composition is incredible, using deep and vibrant colors for the body, neck and fins for the animal against a bright light background of blue and white geometric squares. This technique really causes the fish to stand out against a radiating background that is almost reminiscent of light piercing through water. The sharp geometric pattern of the fish’s scales juxtaposes the flowing organic shapes of the fish’s fins. The piece as a whole is very stylistic and truly captures Harris’ unique approach to contemporary modern art.

"Conviction" The Art Show

This Saturday June 26^th Element Lounge in San Francisco is hosting “Conviction”, an incredible art exhibition in support and tribute to leukemia and lymphoma research, victims and their families. The exhibition will consists of artwork in bright orange, the official color of Leukemia and Lymphoma research, with the central piece being an exquisite and eye opening 40 foot mural created by Robert D. Harris, Ian Ross, Max Ehrman and other amazing bay area talent. Music and visual artists will collaborate to bring you an evening of innovative culture and philanthropy, as all proceeds of the $5 - $10 donation will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of San Francisco. Many amazing original pieces will also be on display for sale with the theme of hope, spirit, and tenacity. So come on out, be inspired, and help support a truly meaningful cause. Murals

Murals gain their cultural significance in that they expand art out in to the public sphere, where individuals who might never venture into a formal art gallery, are able to view the work of art. Here they are able to foster creative progress within a society on an otherwise unimagined wall. Many times murals are also used as a vehicle for social change and political action, as they are accessible to the general public within a designated location. An Artist who is widely known for doing just this is Diego Rivera, who was commissioned to paint many large scale murals in both Mexico and the United States that many times exemplified his radical political beliefs. Commissioned in San Francisco in 1940 to paint a mural for the Golden Gate International Exposition, the piece entitled Pan American Unity (an exert shown below) resides today at the City College of San Francisco.

San Francisco is still a city that is receptive to the free expression of mural art. Shown above is Action, a mural painted by Robert D. Harris. Consistent with many other underlying themes in his work, this piece signifies growth, change and self-realization and intended to not only enhance the beauty of the city, but to stimulate awareness of these themes through its unique composition and color.

Impressionism

The Impressionist movement, originating in France in the 19th century, was a style chiefly defined by visible brush strokes, a sense of movement, the inclusion of light in various forms and colors, and a usually ordinary subject matter depicted outside using the transient effects of natural sunlight. By taking the studio out into the everyday world, Impressionists deviated from previously accepted forms of art, as most influential art movements do, and painted not simply the subject matter, but how the human eye views that subject matter. There were many highly recognized Impressionist painters that this time in France; Renoir, Degas, Manet, Cassatt, Morisot, Monet, to name a few. Here, pictured below is Monet's Impression, Sunrise, the painting that inspired the movement it's title. Pictured above is Robert D. Harris' Ocean, demonstrating the clear effects of light through water and capturing both the simplicity and depth of these two elements.

Abstract Expressionism

Abstract expressionism was one of the first major recognized art movements that was specifically American in its origins; first being used to describe Wassily Kandinsky’s work like “The Sensual” shown above. Although the abstract expressionist movement spread quickly throughout the United States, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area were the epicenters of the movement in the 1940’s and the 1950’s when the style was first recognized and made popular. The groups of loosely associated artists that founded the movement differentiated themselves with a stylistically diverse body of work that introduced radical new directions in art and shifted the art world's focus.

The art work its self had an image of being rebellious and idiosyncratic, valuing spontaneity and improvisation. Abstract expressionist pieces can be categorized into two major groups, some have an emphasis on dynamic energetic movement in the piece, like many of Jackson Pollock’s pieces, and some abstract expressionists use more of a color blocking technique, with more of the focus on large fields of color, like Hans Hoffman or Clyfford Still. The most substantial element that held these first artists of the movement together was the philosophy behind their work and not the actual aesthetic elements of it.

The movement attributes the highest importance to the process and the development of the piece, not just the finished product. To see Robert Harris paint live is to see the greatest aspect of abstract expressionism. The strokes used, the color dynamics, and the energy that Harris possesses behind the brush are the true stylistic techniques that define the movement. Many of Harris’ pieces possess these primary characteristics of abstract expressionism, for example, “Stained” shown below with its distinct blocks of color, dripped paint, and evident action, it demonstrates the spontaneity and energetic quality that is central to the abstract expressionsim.

Cubism

Cubism, one of the most widely influential art movements, is based off the simplistic principles of converting represented forms into geometric shapes. Its unique beauty is in its rejection of the traditional techniques of foreshadowing, perspective and modeling as it instead transposes the familiar three dimensional subjects into flat images on a two dimensional surface. The founders of this revolutionary movement are still some of its greatest contributors, like Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso and French artist Georges Braques, who were inspired by African art and other non-western sources.

Below, Picasso’s Woman in a Blue Hat demonstrates this altered reality through radically fragmented objects that is so characteristic of the style. Robert D. Harris’ Colliding Lines, above, is extremely representative of the cubist movement and its core principles as well. Instead of painting from just one angle, Harris has painted the faces in this piece from multiple angles at the same time in order to represent an object in the most complete way possible and still on a two dimensional canvas surface. It is evident, looking at these pieces, the mystique that this unconventional style possesses and the unique hold it has on its viewers as reality is bent and twisted before their eyes.

Against the Grayne

This Friday March 26^th Space Gallery will be ushering in spring with the opening of their art installation Against the Grayne. This collective show and revolves around the central theme of nature and trees as inspiration for art using found wood as the primary medium for all exhibited works.

Against the Grayne features the innovative creations of Robert D. Harris, "ELLE", Sid Enk from Tea Shack Project, Mike 3.5 Ink, Chor Boogie, Ricky Watts, and Luis Rivas and more. Curated by Dylan Kelly, Sid Enk Jr, Elle, and Mike 3.5 ink, this two story installation opening will be providing entertaining live art performances, drink specials and an amazing array of bay area talent!

Surrealism

The term and expression of surrealism was originally developed as a backlash against excessive rational thought and previously established techniques of creating art of all forms in the 1920’s. Improvisation was a key to their creativity, constructing art on the spot, without extensive forethought was at the heart of their values.

The creators of the movement believed in automatic writing and painting, where the artist creates without mindful thought and intent, letting their subconscious run free. Free association, dream analysis and bringing to the surface the hidden unconscious, all utilizing Freudian concepts, was of the utmost importance to true Surrealism in developing methods to liberate imagination.

When we think of surrealism and surrealist painting, we can’t help but to conjure up some of the more universally recognized works that portray this movement, like those of Dali and Miro and Ernst. Like Miro’s “Portrait of Mrs. Mill” shown here, their works are ambiguous and suggestive rather than strictly figurative.

Looking at Robert D. Harris’ paintings brings to mind many of these core surrealist themes, the slight distortion of reality, the unraveling of spontaneous thought and the challenging of rational standards. His artwork possesses the uninhibited and stimulates the imagination, summoning inspiration from its viewers. His original piece, “Left Hand Envy," shown above, displays this free thought and renouncing of artistic norms. To see Harris paint live truly is to witness this improvisation and impulsive creation in its purest form and beings to mind the central premise on which true surrealism was created upon.
